Man gets 30 lashes, to wash public toilets for 30 days over theft

A 36-year-old man, Jamilu Isa, has received 30 strokes of cane for trespassing into a company’s premises and stealing a sign post.

The convict, a resident of Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano metropolis, in Kano State, was also sentenced to 30 days of community service.

Isa was ordered to wash the public toilets in his community for 30 days as part of the punishment for his offences.

He was arraigned before a Shariah Court at Fagge Quarters, Kano on two-count charge bothering on trespass and theft.

The police informed the court that Isa trespassed into the premises of a private firm located at Rijiyar Zaki Quarter from where he took the company’s sign post and carted it away.

The charge against him read that Isa stole the company’s sign post after unlawfully gaining entrance into the premises recently.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Abdul Wada, told the court that the convict acted in a manner that contravened the provisions of the Shariah Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
Isa, who pleaded guilty, prayed the court to be lenient in its sentence against him.

Our correspondent reports that the sentence took instant effect on the convict.
