THE Akwa Ibom State High Court, sitting in Ikot Ekpene, has sentenced a 31-year-old man to death by hanging for killing his 60-year-old father, Pius David Ototi.
The man, Edidiong Pius Ototi, admitted in his confessional statement at the Police Headquarters that he killed his father because he was a wizard and buried him inside a pit toilet.
He had accused his father of being responsible for the untimely death of his two grandchildren.
The accused, a native of Ikot Akwa, in Obot Akara Local Government Area of the state, was found guilty by the presiding Judge, Justice Augustine Odokwo, who ruled that
the offence was punishable by death, under Section 326 (1) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Akwa Ibom State 2000.
Justice Odokwo said the prosecuting team from the State Ministry of Justice was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused person actually committed the murder.
He said the accused son had no right under the law to take the life of his father over allegations of being responsible for the untimely death of his two grandchildren.
He ruled that Edidiong should be “hanged by the neck until he dies” and prayed to God to have mercy upon his soul.
