Man Utd coach retains Oyedele in first team

Manchester-born defensive midfielder Maxi Oyedele has been retained in the first team despite the return of several midfielders to Carrington Training Complex at the weekend. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag made the interesting decision before announcing his roster for the United States Tour.

Defensive-minded midfielders Casemiro and Scott McTominay have resumed pre-season training, and they were joined by Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes who also feature in the middle of the park for the Red Devils.

The quartet were given extra days off after representing their respective nations in European Championship qualifiers and friendlies last month.

Oyedele training with the first team has put him in contention to be included in the traveling squad to the United States.

The Poland U19 international of Nigerian descent has been training with United’s first team players since the start of pre-season preparations and traveled to Norway with the squad but was not utilized off the bench during the 2-0 win against Leeds United.

Oyedele has been on the books of Manchester United since the age of eight after he was poached from Premier League rivals Burnley.

He excelled during a loan spell at National League club Altrincham FC in the second half of last season, scoring four goals in twelve matches in the fifth tier of English football, with one of his strikes nominated for the club’s Goal of the Season accolade.
