Mane’s goal not enough to save misfiring Bayern Munich

In their most recent blunder, league-leading Bayern Munich lost 3-1 to Mainz 05 at the weekend with Sadio Mane netting the lone goal to the defending champions.

With five games left in the season, this loss could prove costly in the fight for the Bundesliga championship.

The Bavarians, who were eliminated by Manchester City on Wednesday from the Champions League, could not have asked for a worse afternoon after taking the lead thanks to Sadio Mane’s far-post header in the 29th minute.

Borussia Dortmund, which is now in second position with 57 points, can overtake Bayern, which is vying for an 11th straight league title, with a victory over Eintracht Frankfurt later on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern, who have now won only one of their past six games across all competitions, were unable to create any more chances despite controlling more than 70% of the ball for more than an hour.

After repeatedly failing to clear the ball, they were penalized for poor play in the 65th minute when goalkeeper Yann Sommer blasted the ball straight into the head of Ludovic Ajorque, who only needed to nod in for the equalizer.

The Bayern club managers watched in full disbelief from the terraces as Leandro Barreiro scored and put the hosts in lead thanks to yet another defensive blunder by Josip Stanisic.

The hosts, who are now sixth and in the running for a position in Europe, however, weren’t finished yet as Aaron Martin rifled in their third goal in the 79th to make it 10 games without a loss for Mainz.
