Masked robbers dispossess trader of cash, handset at gunpoint

Two suspected armed robbers have dispossessed a woman of N40, 000 and a mobile phone at gunpoint in Ajegunle, Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The victim, who identified herself simply as Fausatu, explained that after power outage, she wanted to put on her generating set around 11pm, when she suddenly saw two masked men pointing a gun at her.

She said she began to sweat, even in the cold weather. She said she was shivering as she led the robbers into her shop.

Fausatu said she was so scared that she could not shout. She started begging the masked armed robbers not to harm or kill her.

Fausatu, a trader who owns a provision shop at Baale Aiyetoro Street, Ajegunle, said, “You want to know how the robbers came and robbed me in this shop. I will not tell you my real name. Okay, you can write Fausatu. I don’t want any problem. I was trying to put on my generating set after power outage. As I came out from the shop, I never knew that armed robbers were around and watching me from a distance. Immediately I bent down to start the ignition of the machine, one of them touched me from behind. As I raised my head up, the other robber pointed a gun at me and ordered me to go inside the shop.

“I obeyed them. They followed me inside the shop. They ordered me to bring all the money I had on me and in the shop. I had about N40,000 and some petty cash. They collected all the money and also took away my handset.”

She expressed worries that young men were no longer interested in learning trades or going to school, noting that the development was responsible for the prevalence of armed robbery and cultism in the society.

Fausatu called on the police to beef up security in Baale Aiyetoro Street, adding, “I know this our DPO (Divisional Police Officer) in charge of Ajeromi Police Station is trying. Police should put one patrol vehicle at Baale Street. Especially, this Kehinde Street junction here (pointing). Robbers are everywhere. Not only in Ajegunle. Not only in Lagos, everywhere in the country. People are suffering. No work. No job. What next? Robbery. Gangsterism, cultism,
name it.”

Before this incident, a group of robbers attacked a woman selling yam powder along the same Baale Street and dispossessed her of N200,000 cash.

It was gathered that immediately, the Divisional Police Officer of Ajeromi Division, Chief Superintendent of Police Sunday Digha, heard of it, he led a team of policemen that combed the area.

Digha recovered one locally made pistol from a suspect. The suspect was said to have concealed the gun in the ceiling of his house, where policemen recovered it.

A police inspector, attached to the station, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said Digha had already spread his dragnet to catch the fleeing masked
robbers.
