Mavin’s new act, Drille debunks claims of Don Jazzy ‘acting like their father’

Don Jazzy has often described Korede Bello, Rekaado and Di’ja as his children and this has been questioned by certain people in the industry.

While speaking with The Point, a new signee, Johnny Drille, says Jazzy does not relate with them like he is their father.

According to Drille, Jazzy is only passionate about every artiste he is working with.

“Everyone got signed for a particular reason; I think I got signed because Jazzy loved my sound. When you have people you are passionate about, you want to refer to them as your kids or brothers or sisters,” Drille said.

Born and raised in Benin, the graduate of University of Benin admitted that things have been better since he joined the Mavin family three months ago and he is thankful to God for the opportunity.

“The industry is quite saturated with lots of artistes. So, everyone is struggling to get attention. I knew I had good music and people would love it but getting people’s attention was an issue. I don’t think so much has changed in me since joining Mavin. But when it comes to the music and how people accept me, it has made things a lot easier.

“We were three that got signed. It is like a family there, though I didn’t expect to blend in quickly because it is another level for me. We have Tiwa Savage, Korede, Reekado and others, but they’ve all made it feel like we are the same,” Drille noted.

Though his first o ff i c i a l s i n g l e under Mavin, ‘Wait F o r Me,’ was released before he joined the label, he stated that they thought it was a wise idea to push a song that was already in the public.

“For my kind of music, you would want to do proper planning before you hit the market. My sound is not pop music, so you have to approach it differently.

“I like to tell my stories even though they are not entirely mine. ‘Wait For Me’ was inspired by someone I met during NYSC in Enugu State. I thought we had something going on and she was cool with me too. But when we got posted to different places, it ended,” he said.
