Military declares state of emergency in Sudan

The military in Sudan has declared state of emergency just as it dissolves civilian rule in the country.

Consequent upon the pronouncement, the military reportedly arrested political leaders in the country.

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok had been reportedly put under house arrest at an unknown location.

Earlier, intense protests had been reported in Khartoum, the Sudan capital with thousands of civilians joining the protests amid sporadic gunfire.

The overthrow of the former president, Omar Al-Bashir, two years ago and the formation of a transitional rule, led to division between the military and civilian rulers in the country.

Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, who headed a joint council with civilian leaders, blamed political infighting on the development.

Sudan has been in a deep economic crisis, with huge international support. However, there are suspicions that the military takeover might deprive the country of the largesse.
