Mother drags son to court for stealing her goods

A 40-year-old-woman, Justina Nkemakolam, has accused one of her children, Chisom Nkemakolam, of stealing her goods.

The complainant, a dealer in all kinds of seafood, is based in Hausa Quarters, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Nkemakolam, mother-of-five, had reported her son to the police.

The suspect was arraigned at an Abakaliki Magistrate Court for theft. The woman said that her son, aged 20, stole and sold off tons of her goods at cheap prices.

The police also arraigned Cecilia Chukwu, Nwafor Chinelo and Ogili Charity for allegedly receiving the stolen goods from Chisom, knowing that they were stolen.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Mbam, said that the alleged stolen goods worth N1, 230,000, and that the offence was committed at the complainant’s warehouse between October and December, 2021.

The charge against the suspects read that “You Chisom Nkemakolam, sometimes in the month of October, 2021, at Hausa Quarters, Abakaliki, in the Abakaliki Magisterial District, did steal bags of stock fish, dried fish, crayfish and dried frog valued at N780,000, property of one Mrs. Justina Nkemakolam.

“You (defendant) in December 2021 at the same place did steal bags of dried fish valued at N450, 000, property of one Mrs. Justina Nkemakolam.

“You Chukwu Cecilia, Nwafor Chinelo and Ogili Charity, and others now at large, sometimes in the months of November and December, 2021 at Hausa Quarters, Abakaliki, did receive crayfish, dried fish, stock fish and dried frog valued at N780,000 and 450,000 from Chisom Nkemakolam, knowing same to have been stolen or unlawfully possessed.”

Mbam said that the four defendants committed offences contrary to and punishable under sections 427 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count-charge. They did not have counsel to represent them.
Presiding Magistrate, Hannah Nweze, ordered that the defendants be remanded in the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Abakaliki and adjourned the matter till March 26 for hearing.
