My wife beats me up, even in church, man tells court

A man, Lawal Ololade, has begged a Magistrate’s Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve the marriage between him and his wife, Shadia Lawal, over alleged frequent battery and assault.

He alleged that his wife was always beating him physically whenever there was a misunderstanding between him.

Ololade, who is a resident of Sango, Ibadan, said he no longer enjoyed his marriage, because of his incessant humiliation by his wife.

He told the court, “I made a big mistake with this woman. She will kill me if I continue with this marriage. She knows nothing less than fighting. She slaps me at will whenever we have a misunderstanding and I wouldn’t want to engage her.

“I have made efforts to correct her misbehaviour by informing our pastor, but rather than turn a new leaf, she gets worse.

“There was a day she was about to kill me in the midnight because we quarrelled at night. I managed to escape with several wounds on my body.

“I can’t count the number of times she had attacked and torn my clothes in the church and at other public gatherings.

“I stopped reporting her to her parents because they were obviously not interested in what becomes of her.”

The respondent, who, however, opposed the divorce, was unable to deny most of the allegations levelled against her by her husband.

On her part, she said, “My lord, our pastor is the problem in our marriage.

“The pastor has convinced my husband to marry another woman from his church.

“I noticed a change in my husband since I had a miscarriage. He refused to show any concern.

“He started coming home late and also stopped performing his roles as husband.”

The President of the court, Henry Agbaje, requested the couple to provide more evidence to substantiate their claims.

Agbaje adjourned the case.
