The Meiran Grade A Customary Court in Lagos has dissolved an 18-year-old marriage between Morufu Odedeyi and his wife, Sunkanmi, over an allegation by Odedeyi that his wife frequently beats him with horsewhip.
Odedeyi, in a case with suit number ACC/ 236/CV/2012, had approached the court seeking immediate dissolution of their marriage.
He told the court that his wife always whipped him with horsetail whenever they had minor domestic squabbles.
Odedeyi said, “When I had an accident, instead of taking care of me, she decided to abandon me to my fate. My wife is a carefree woman who does not respect the tenets of our marriage. She shamelessly brings men to our matrimonial home for the purpose of having illicit affairs.”
Sunkanmi, the defendant in the matter, was, however, not in court to tell her own side of the story, despite all summons served on her.
Convinced that the marriage had broken down irretrievably, the court dissolved it and ordered the couple to go their separate ways.
