NGX extends losing streak by N344.95bn

  • Equities trading on the Nigerian Exchange Limited extended its bearish run streak on Tuesday as selloffs in shares of TRANSCORP, ETI, and DANGSUGAR which suffered 10.0 percent, 9.8 percent and 10.0 percent respectively.

    The pressure drove the All-Share Index lower by 0.51 percent to 106,904.25 points, as the Month-to-Date closed negatively at 0.9 percent, while Year-to-Date returns remained positive at 3.9 percent.

    Consequently, the market capitalization dropped to N66.94 trillion as investors absolved loss of N34495 billion.

    Market performance analysis shows that the total volumes traded increased by 28.4 percent to 395.47 million units, valued at N8.76 billion, and exchanged in 13,967 deals. UCAP was the most traded stock by volume at 40.53 million units, while ZENITHBANK was the most traded stock by value at N1.23 billion.

    On sectors, the Banking, Consumer Goods, and Oil & Gas, indices declined by 1.8 percent, 0.4 percent and 0.4 percent respectively, while the Insurance index advanced by 0.7 percent. The Industrial Goods index closed flat.

    As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was negative (0.3x), as 43 tickers lost relative to 15 gainers. ETERNA and TRANSCORP posted the most significant losses of the day shedding 10.0 percent each, while UHOMREIT and NEM led the gainers with 9.9 percent and 8.8 percent share price increase respectively.

    Power generation hits 5,713.60MW – TCN

    Also, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced that Nigeria’s power sector has generated 5,713.60MW, a new peak generation for the year 2025.

    In a statement, TCN said the peak was recorded on Tuesday, March 2, 2025, at 21:30 hours, adding that it was successfully transmitted.

    TCN said the new generation peak of 5,713.60 megawatts surpasses the previous peak generation of 5,543.20MW achieved on February 14, 2025, by 170.40 MW.

    It said although the new peak is lower than the all-time maximum peak generation of 5,801.60MW recorded on March 1, 2021, by 88MW, it remains a notable achievement.

    TCN stated that a new record for the maximum daily energy ever attained in the history of the electricity industry in Nigeria was also set on Monday, with a total of 125,542.06MWh.

    It said the new record surpasses the previous record of 125,159.48MWh achieved on February 14, 2025, by 382.58 MWh.
