Nigeria’s veteran journalist, ‘Peter Pan’ dies at 88

One of Africa’s most celebrated international journalists, Peter Enahoro, popularly known as ‘Peter Pan’, is dead. He died in London on Monday. He was 88.

Born on January 21, 1935, Enahoro was also an author, businessman and publisher. He has been described as “perhaps Africa’s best known international journalist”.

Peter Enahoro, is the brother of one of the fighters for the independence of Nigeria, the late Anthony Enahoro.

Peter Enahoro’s death was made public via a short statement by Ms. Bunmi Sofola, another veteran journalist confirming that Peter Pan died in London.

She wrote, “Regret to announce the passing on of our iconic journalist Peter Enahoro “Peter Pan” today in London at the age of 88. RIP.
“Also known by the pen name of “Peter Pan” because of his popular column in New African magazine under that name. He has been described as ‘perhaps Africa’s best-known international journalist’”.

Enahoro had risen to limelight in journalism at a very young age when he was made an editor at 23.
He later went into exile and worked with many foreign media organisations including serving as the Editor of Radio Deutsche Welle in Cologne, Germany, from 1966 to 1976, and was Africa Editor of National Zeitung, in Basel, Switzerland, becoming Editorial Director of New African magazine in London in 1978.
Enahoro later founded Africa Now magazine and in 1996, was brought back to Nigeria to serve as Sole Administrator of Daily Times.
