The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has dismissed reports of an explosion at the Port Harcourt Refining Company in Rivers State, clarifying that the incident was merely a flare event that has since been fully contained.
The explanation addresses the rampant rumors and false information that indicated a significant blast took place at the refinery, which heightened worries about potential dangers to employees, local inhabitants, and ecological safety.
An official announcement issued on Wednesday by NNPC Ltd.’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, stressed that there was no danger to workers, adjacent neighborhoods, or the natural surroundings due to the conditions at the refinery.
“There is no danger or health hazard to staff, the surrounding communities, or the environment,” Soneye assured.
He further urged the public and media outlets to disregard false reports, stressing that there was no explosion at the Port Harcourt refinery and that such misinformation could cause unnecessary panic.
According to NNPC, the event in question is a flare incident, a frequent event at oil refineries where excessive gas is safely burned out by controlled processes. Flare events can create visible flames and noise, but do not show dangerous explosions or uncontrolled fire.
Experts note that flaring is a standard safety measure used in refineries and oil and gas processing facilities to prevent the buildup of excess pressure and safely manage hydrocarbon gases.
Reaffirming its dedication to operational safety and environmental responsibility, NNPC Ltd. reiterated that all necessary measures were taken to control the flare incident promptly.
The corporation told the public that it follows stringent safety measures and will continue to give timely and accurate information about its activities.
As part of its transparency initiatives, NNPC Ltd. has urged stakeholders, including media professionals, to seek information directly from official sources before propagating false reports.
Soneye highlighted that false information regarding refinery operations may lead to undue worry among the public and hinder business functions.
He urged media companies to collaborate with NNPC Ltd. to ensure that the public receives only factual and verified updates.
The message continued with a request for calm as normal operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery continue unabated.
This statement from NNPC Ltd. aims to put an end to inaccurate reports while underlining the company’s commitment to operational safety, environmental responsibility, and openness in all of its activities.
