NYSC to prosecute graduates for shunning mobilization

The National Youth Service Corps says it is collaborating with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps to ensure that graduates who fail to appear for mobilisation after the completion of their studies are prosecuted.

The NYSC Director-General, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, made the disclosure during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the NSCDC on the prosecution of criminal cases, in Abuja, on Friday.

He said, “The NYSC will, henceforth, prosecute Nigerian graduates who refuse to present themselves for mobilisation for National Service after completion of their studies.

“Section 13 Sub Section 1(a) and (b) of the NYSC Bye-Laws empowers the Service Corps to prosecute offenders.”

In 2018, the NYSC said that it would sanction employers suspected to be condoning misconducts by corps members doing primary assignments within their organizations.

Ibrahim, who stated that the NYSC encountered hiccups in prosecuting cases, expressed optimism in the prospect of its partnership with the NSCDC.

He lauded the NSCDC for spearheading the dismantling of a fake NYSC Camp 11 years ago as well as the prosecution of the culprits.

The NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, in his remarks on the occasion, assured the NYSC of the Command’s readiness to support the Scheme for desired result.
