Obi accepts Okupe’s resignation

BY BRIGHT JACOB

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in next year’s presidential election, Peter Obi, has accepted the resignation of the Director General of his campaign organization, Doyin Okupe.

In a letter addressed to Okupe, on Wednesday, Obi said that the story about the historic efforts towards the good work of trying to forge a new direction for Nigeria would not be complete without mentioning Okupe’s commitment, dedication and boundless energy that the former campaign Director General brought to bear.

Obi wrote, “My Dear Elder Brother Doyin, I received your letter offering to step aside in order to avoid any distraction to the good work of trying to forge a new direction for our country, on board of which you have been from inception. It is a decision which I respect.

“The story of this historic effort, which has galvanized millions of our countrymen, particularly our youths, cannot be complete without mentioning your commitment, dedication, and the boundless energy that you brought to bear.

“It is my sincere hope that our legal system will afford you an opportunity to eventually clear your name.

“Your brother, Peter Obi,” the letter ended.

Okupe had earlier “stepped aside” from his position as the Director General of the Obi-Datti presidential campaign council after he was convicted by a Federal High Court which sat in Abuja.

In a letter addressed to Obi, Okupe pleaded with Obi to choose another DG for his campaign, as he (Okupe) didn’t want his legal travails to be a “distraction” for Obi and the Labour Party.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, in a suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against Okupe, ruled that Okupe violated the Money Laundering Act after he received N200m cash from former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Okupe was also slammed with a two-year jail term or the option to pay a fine of N13m. Okupe, however, paid the fine.
