Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Camping Council, Doyin Okupe, on Monday night reacted to the ruling of a Federal High Court early in the day which convicted him for money laundering offenses.
Waxing philosophical in a terse tweet, Okupe said “God is not man.”
Writing on his verified handle @doyinokupe, the medical doctor turned politician stated that his enemies have been unrelenting but that they have continued to fail.
“God is not man.
The enemies have tried in so many ways but kept on failing..
Victory is of God.”
Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant on Media to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was sentenced to two years jail term or an option of N13 million fine which it was learnt he paid on Monday evening.
Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu convicted for money laundering and diversion of funds.
Okupe was arraigned on a 59-count charge of money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2019 for accepting N204 million from the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, in 2014.
Justice Ojukwu found the defendant guilty in 26 out of the 59 charges.
She ordered that the 26 charges which attract a two-year jail term each, would run concurrently.
The judge, however, gave the convict an option of N500, 000 fine in each of the counts, totaling N13 million to be paid before 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
She ordered that Okupe be taken to Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja to serve his jail term if he fails to pay the fine within the time frame.
But prominent members of the society reportedly pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in Okupe’s sentencing.
It was learnt that by the close of work on Monday, Okupe had paid the money.
