Ondo NURTW members clash at motor park, chairman injured

There was pandemonium at Ondo park in Akure, the Ondo State capital as members of National Union of Road Transport Workers clashed over leadership of the motor park.

It was gathered that crisis ensued when the Chairman of the Union at the park, Kole Adewale, arrived and was challenged by his deputy, Benson James who questioned his presence at the park.

The situation led to a serious altercation among drivers at the park which later resulted into exchange of blows and throwing of dangerous objects at each other.

It was gathered that Adewale was hit on the head with a big stone by his deputy and blood gushed out.

The deputy, it was learnt, had planned to upstage Adewale immediately Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa was sworn-in as the Governor of Ondo State.

The fight disrupted activities at the park and caused tension in the environment.

The injured chairman was rushed to a hospital where he has been receiving treatment.

A witness account said the deputy is “over-ambitious” and that he has the backing of the caretaker chairman of the state NURTW, Ademola Odudu who is allegedly inciting crisis in the Union.

The Chairman of the park, Kole Adewale in a telephone chat said he could not say anything as he is still nursing injuries.

Efforts to speak with Ademola Odudu and James proved abortive as their telephone lines were unreachable

Reports say drivers loyal to Adewale are planning reprisal attacks which could lead to a breakdown of law and order in the state capital.

Stakeholders have now appealed to the state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa to quickly wade into the crisis before it gets out of hands.
