One dies, two injured as truck crushes roadside traders, vehicles in Osun

Tragedy struck on Monday after a quarry truck rammed into some roadside traders and commercial motorcycle operators in Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State.

The Point gathered that the truck had developed a brake failure while plying the Oja-Oba road in the afternoon and crushed some traders selling wares beside the road and some vehicles stationed in the area.

A commercial motorcycle rider who was sitting on his bike at the gate of the palace of Akinrun of Ikirun was said to have died on the spot after the truck crushed him.

Some traders were left injured in the accident that has thrown the ancient town into mourning.

The truck, according to the witness account, was coming from Obaagun road when the driver discovered that its brake had failed.

In bid to stop the vehicle, the driver was said to have headed towards the palace gate with the aim of using the gate to stop it from moving further.

Traders and some vehicles at the area were reportedly crushed in the process.

The injured victims were said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

When contacted by our correspondent, the Osun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Commander Henry Benamaisia confirmed the incident saying one person died while two others were injured.

He said the truck driver lost control of the vehicle after the brake failed, saying FRSC officials got to the scene after the crash, evacuated the deceased and rescued two persons that were injured.

According to him, “One person died and two persons were injured. Seven persons were all involved, five vehicles including three bikes, one car and one truck. After the accident, my men, OYES cadets and the police went to the scene. I cannot really say the person that died until they do verification. The truck had brake failure and rammed into the vehicles.”
