Our leaders don’t believe in Nigeria-ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has decried the situation of things in the country, saying the leaders do not believe in Nigeria.

Speaking on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the Oyo State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Mokola, Ibadan, the University of Ibadan Branch Chairman of the union, Dr. Deji Omole, pointed out that the ruling class was united against the masses for their selfish interest.

“The ruling class is united against the masses.  That’s why it’s very difficult to fight them because they have a common interest”,the ASUU chairman said.

He also decried the action of government on education, saying the ruling class was bent on killing public education. “Government wants to kill public education”,he said.

Omole further said, “In our fight for a better society, we must continue to work together. It is our responsibility to speak for the voiceless and to protect the interest of the masses. Nigeria of today is not Nigeria of our dream when we were growing up.

“No nation cannot  grow beyond the quality of its graduates coming out of universities and other tertiary institutions.  You have a lot of jobs to do. Our salvation is not in the hand of the ruling class, we must fight it.

“A nation  endowed  like Nigeria can’t refine oil for local consumption.  This will continue until we have a leader that believes in Nigeria.  Once you don’t believe in something, there are limit to the number of issues you can genuinely address.

“It’s unfortunate that we are in this mess.  As long as we remain focused, we’ll continue the fight.

“2019 is around again. They will divide us on ethnic and religious lines” .

The unionist added,”The country will not move forward until we organise ourselves to move forward.  No PDP or APC has solutions to our problems.  That’s why they are moving from one party to another”.

On the fight against  corruption, the ASUU chieftain said the country had weak institutions, but it’s building strong individuals. “If you want to fight corruption, you don’t have to make noise about it”,he added.
