Police arraign man, 43, over N3.8m fraud

Police operatives attached to the Apapa Police Station, Lagos, have arrested and arraigned a 43- year-old man for allegedly defrauding his victim of N3,830,000.00 in the metropolis.

The accused person, Babagana Shetima, is facing a two-count charge in an Apapa Magistrate’s Court over the offences.

The Investigating Police Officer, Sgt Zakari Suleiman, brought the accused person to the court.

The police said that the accused person, Shetima, committed the offence at Apapa in Lagos State.

The prosecutor, Inspector F. Asu, told the court that Shetima “did fraudulently obtain the sum of Three million, eight hundred and thirty thousand Naira (N3, 830, 000.00) from one Bello Aminu ‘M,’ with the pretence to clear out his container from Apapa Port, knowing same to be false and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 314 (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

In the second count charge, Asu said that the accused person “did  steal the sum of Three million, eight hundred and thirty thousand Naira  (N 3,830, 000.00)  from one Bello Aminu ‘M’  and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 281 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The presiding Magistrate, M.O. Olubi, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N1miilion, with two sureties in like
sum.

Olubi said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused while the other must a be civil servant  not below  Grade Level 05, or in a managerial position in a reputable company and must show his three years tax clearance.

The Magistrate further ruled that the addresses of the sureties must be verified.

The Magistrate adjourned the case till December, 10, 2019.
