Police arraign market woman for expending stolen money on pool betting

A 45-year-old trader, Abimbola Olalekan, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo, Osun State, for allegedly stealing co-trader’s money and expending same on pool betting.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Kayode Adeoye, alleged that the offence was committed on July 10, 2021 at the popular Igbona Market, Osogbo.

Adeoye said that Abimbola conspired with others at large to steal the sum of N29, 800 belonging to Muminat Abdulazeez, a trader, from her United Bank for Africa account.

The prosecutor explained that the defendant used the alleged stolen money for online sport betting.

The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under sections 516 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State, 2002.

Abimbola pleaded not guilty to the two-count-charge of conspiracy and theft.

Najite Okobe, defence counsel, urged the court to grant the accused woman bail in liberal term.

Magistrate M.A Olatunji granted the defendant N50, 000 bail with one surety in like amount.

The surety, the magistrate said, must furnish the court with three-year-tax clearance certificate.

The matter was adjourned till October 27 for hearing.
