Police arraign seven Osun residents for stoning Oyetola’s wife, aides

The Osun State Police Command, on Tuesday, arraigned seven persons at an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly attacking the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola.

The defendants included: Omolola Paul, 40, Rasaki Hammed, 19, Soliu Waheed, 21,  Tiamiyu Basiru, 30, Olayiwola John, 26, Owoade Mutiu, 28, and Ibrahim Tunde, 20.

They were arraigned on four count-charges bordering on conspiracy to commit felony, serious assault and malicious damage.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Asanbe Kayode, accused the defendants with others at large of causing the breach of peace by attacking the First Lady and inflicting injuries on her aides, Messrs Benson Oyebode and Femi Alabi, an operative of the Department of State Security by throwing stones at them.

He added that the defendants unlawfully damaged the glasses of three vehicles in Mrs. Oyetola’s convoy adding that the values of the damaged vehicles were yet to be known and that they are properties of the Osun State Government attached to the First Lady.

Addressing the court, the prosecutor alleged that the accused persons committed the offence on August 19, 2022 at about 8:00pm at Owode-Ede market in Ede.

Asanbe said the offences contravened sections 516, 249, 451(b), 356(2) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Their counsel, S.A Gbenle prayed the court to admit them to bail, noting that they would provide reliable sureties to stand their trial.

The presiding magistrate, I.R. Salami consequently granted them bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in the like sum.

The case was adjourned till September 26 for hearing.
