Operatives of the Osun State Police Command have arrested a 27-year-old man, Rasheed Kola, for allegedly stealing a goat and slaughtering it.

It was gathered that the suspect, after stealing the animal at midnight, prepared pepper soup with the meat.

When Kola was dragged before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court, the police said that the alleged stolen goat, worth N25,000, belonged to a woman called Opeyemi Akinokun.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode, said that the accused person committed the offence on February 23, at about 2:45am at Lajomo, Oke-Odo, Olude area, Osogbo.

Kayode stated that the defendant unlawfully slaughtered the goat after stealing it. He said that Kola committed offences contrary to and punishable under sections 450 and 383 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of stealing and unlawful killing of the goat leveled against him.

Defence counsel, T. B. Ayodele, prayed the court to grant Kola bail on affordable terms promising that the defendant would provide reliable surety.

However, the bail application was opposed by the police prosecutor on the grounds that Kola would jump bail if granted.

Magistrate Adekanmi Adeyeba granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20, 000 with a surety in the same amount. He said that the surety must swear an affidavit of means.

The case was adjourned till March 9 for hearing.
