Police arrest man for allegedly owning gun, impersonating soldier

The Police in Osun State have arraigned a 29-year-old-man, Matthew Adedokun, before a Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo for allegedly impersonating a soldier and possessing a gun.

Adedokun was also accused of being in possession of cannabis sativa, military uniforms and other accoutrements of the Armed Forces.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Elisha Olusegun, informed the court that the defendant conspired with others now at large to commit the offences on April 4, at about 1:20am at Capital Hotel area, Osogbo.

The charge brought against him read that “You, Matthew Adedokun, and others now at large, did unlawfully have in your possession one locally made cut-to-size single barrel gun. That you had in your possession one live cartridge.

“You conspired among yourselves to unlawfully possess weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, uniforms, accoutrements belonging to the Armed Forces. That you unlawfully have in your possession Nigerian Army identity card and camouflage T-shirt belonging to the Nigerian Army.

“That you, on or before April 4, 2022 in Osogbo, did falsely represent yourself as a member of the Nigerian Armed Forces.”

The defendant allegedly committed the offences contrary to Section 4 and punishable under sections 27(1)(b)(I), 27(1)(b)(Ii) of the Firearms Act, Cap F.28, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Olusegun said that the accused person also contravened sections 516, 517, 430, 428(d) and 484 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the allegations leveled against him.

Magistrate A. A. Adebayo granted him bail in the sum of N1 million and two sureties in the same amount.

The magistrate said that one of the sureties must be a landed property owner and must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.

The matter was adjourned till May 30 for hearing.
