THREE policemen were, on Thursday, killed by unknown gunmen in Ebonyi State.

The victims, The Point learnt, were attached to the Safer Highway patrol team and were shot dead while on duty by unknown gunmen at Nwaezenyi Junction axis of Izzi Local Government Area, in Abakaliki.

The gunmen were reportedly in a convoy, disgusing to be mourners. But on getting to the police checkpoint at Nwaezenyi where they were stopped, they were said to have immediately opened fire on the police operatives on duty, killing two.

They were said to have later killed another officer and set a police van ablaze on the same road.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Loveth Odah, confirmed the incident.

She said, “According to our Safer Highway team, some people in disguise were moving in a convoy as if they were doing a burial rally with motorcycles – three motorcycles and three tricycles were in front, while two Sienna buses were following them.

“In the process of checking them, they opened fire and killed two police closer to them at the checkpoint…

“There are traces, in fact, we have gone for on the spot assessment to assess the level of damages and to know what actually happened and we are really looking for a clue to get to the perpetrators. So we have no detailed report yet, but as soon as they are back, we will get the full details.”
