Police drag runaway suspect to court over theft

A 38-year-old-man, Lawal Ismahi, has been arraigned at an Ede Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State for allegedly stealing household items and escaping from police custody after being arrested.

The police accused Ismahi of breaking into a house and stealing property worth N75, 000.

According to the Police prosecutor, Inspector Asanbe Kayode, the offences were committed on June 21, 2022 at about 10:30am, at Adehun Oluwa community, Ede.

The charge preferred against him read that “Lawal Ismahi, on June 21, 2022 at about 10.30am, at Adehun Oluwa community, Ede, did unlawfully break and enter into the house of one Mr Ibikunle Woheed through the window with intent to commit felony and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 413 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“On the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, you did steal a plasma TV valued at N35, 000; a rug valued at N20, 000 and a gas cylinder valued at N20, 000, with total value of N75, 000, property of Ibikunle Waheed and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383(1) and punishable under Section 290(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“You, Lawal Ismahi, sometime in the month of February, 2022, at about 12:30pm at ‘A’ (Police) Division Ede, did escape from lawful police custody with offence of attempt to commit felony and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 135(5) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.”

The defendant, who was legally represented by Samuel Okeji, pleaded guilty to the allegations slammed against him.

Kayode urged the court to adjourn the matter in order for him to prepare and present clear facts of the matter.

Magistrate D. O. Ajibade adjourned the matter till July 13 for presentation of facts. He ordered that Ismahi should be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre.
