Pope Francis prays for victims of Ondo church killings

Pope Francis has offered prayers for Nigeria and victims of a terrorist attack on a Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State on Sunday.

The terrorists’ attack which happened towards the end of Sunday mass, left over 50 people dead, including several children.

A viral video of the incident contained gory images of dead people with gunshot wounds, including children and women soaked in blood.

Initial reports suggested that the attackers also set off explosives during the attack while many of the wounded were said to have been taken to hospitals in Owo.

Expressing solidarity to the victims, Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, in a statement on Sunday said the Catholic pontiff “prays for the victims and for the country, painfully attacked at a time of celebration, and he entrusts everyone to the Lord, that God might send His Spirit to console them.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attack while giving his condolences to the victims’ families an
d ordered emergency agencies to assist those injured.
