Prolonged smart phones use risky to eyes -Optician

The use of smart phones for long hours on social media in poorly lit environment could lead to an eye disease called “Computer Vision Syndrome,” The Point has learnt.

An optician, Dr. Mathilda Ibe, who sounded this note of warning, told The Point at her Scorpio Eye Limited office in Abeokuta, Ogun State, that the effect of such an eye disease could lead to blurry vision and eye ache.

Ibe disclosed that although such an eye defect resulting from long use of smart phones in poorly lit environment might not lead to total blindness, it could cause dry eyes. She said that the smart phone infra-red could have destructive effect on the eyes.

According to her, “Computer Vision Syndrome is an effect that comes with the use of smart phones. The symptoms are blurriness and eye ache, especially when you use it in an environment where the only source of light is the phone.

It may not lead to total blindness but it can also cause dry eyes “. The optician , however, advised users, who stay for longer period on their smart phones at night, while using the social media, not to let the light from their phones be the only source of light, as it could lead to negative effects on their sight.
