Prostitute infects 500 men with HIV in Zamfara, flees state

An unidentified prostitute has taken to her heels after she allegedly infected no fewer than 500 men with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Zamfara State. According to a top police source, the woman, who hails from the Southern part of the country, fled the state after the news of her secret became public.

The state’s Sharia Police have, however, launched a manhunt for the fleeing sex worker. She was said to have moved to Gusau, the state capital, some years back in search of greener pastures, before opening a sex shop in her rented apartment in a neighbourhood along Igbo Road.

According to reports, the woman transmitted the deadly virus to a good number of her customers, including some prominent persons in the state, while her sex trade in Gusau lasted.

She was said to have been exposed after engaging in a public fight with another customer, who suddenly accused her of carrying the deadly virus and spreading it to her customers.

Her sudden disappearance from the area after the fight, it was learnt, convinced many residents about the truth in the allegation that she had been spreading the deadly disease.

Her whereabouts still remain unknown. A source disclosed that some of the prominent persons infected had been placed on antiretroviral drugs by doctors, while others had been having their conditions managed at various health centres in the state.

When contacted, the Chairman of the state’s Shari’ah monitoring group known as Hisbah, Dr. Atiku Balarabe Zawiyya, said that his group was aware of the development and confirmed that the suspect had disappeared to evade arrest by his men who stormed her residence. Zawiyya said his group would continue to fight against social decadence and moral degradation.
