Pandemonium broke out on Friday in the ancient town of Ile-Ife, Osun state, following the killing of five farmers who were on their way to farm in Modakeke community.

The Point gathered that the farmers were allegedly ambushed by gunmen and killed on Friday morning along Toro road in Modakeke, a neighbouring town to Ile-Ife.

Indigenes of the community and sympathisers staged protest to the palace of Ooni of Ife at Enuwa area of Ile-Ife.

The incident generated tension in Ile-Ife as military men prevented protesters from gaining entry into Ooni’s palace.

The protesters stormed the palace gate and demanded that the traditional ruler, Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and security agencies should fish out the assailants.

It was said that policemen visited the scene to evacuate corpses of the farmers.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, SP Yemisi Opalola, said policemen had been drafted to the town to restore peace.

“I heard some people were killed and the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olawale Olokode, has deployed more of our men to the scene. Our men are doing everything possible to restore peace in the area.”
