Rising crime wave worries NSCDC in Jigawa

  • Incidence of rape, sodomy, kidnapping on the increase

The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has expressed concern over the rising incidence of cr the state.

The Civil Defence in the state said that cases of rape, armed robbery, sodomy and kidnapping had become rampant in the state.

The Commandant of the NSCDC in the state, Mohammed Abdu Durumin Iya, in an exclusive interview with our correspondent at the command headquarters in Dutse, the state capital, disclosed that operatives of the corps had in recent times had succeeded in nabbing some suspected rapists and kidnappers as well as some bad eggs who had been terrorising the residents.

There should be stiffer sanctions for child rapist and those pratising sodomy

He said that the Darazo and Gwaram axis of the state and the neighboring forests had become notorious flash points for kidnapping, rape and armed robbery. Durumin Iya, however, said that with his command’s efforts in collaboration with other security agencies in the state, the ugly crime rate was being checked.

He assured that normalcy would soon be restored in the areas and the entire state. The Jigawa NSCDC boss also displeasure over the noncooperative attitude of some local residents, who he accused of withholding vital information on suspected criminals in their midst, adding that if the general public should assist them with information about undesirable elements mingling with the people, combating crime would become much easier for all security agencies in the state.

“But the people don’t cooperate at all, hence our headache. Should they cooperate with us, we shall definitely succeed in wiping out crime from Jigawa State with ease, despite the few logistics problems,” he said.

Durumin Iya then called on the state House of Assembly to enact a law that would stipulate stiffer penalties for kidnappers, armed robbers and rapists, especially for child rapists and those involved in sodomy in order to serve as a deterrent to others in the state.

He also called for the assistance of the local police and other vigilante services, because, according to him, “security challenges are not the responsibility of government security forces alone, but everybody including the general public”.

On farmer/ herdsmen clash, the Jigawa NSCDC boss said a lasting solution to the problem would be the creation of grazing zones for the herdsmen, saying such a development would check the lingering menace. He added that his command had been up and doing in its efforts to stem the tide in the state
