Robbers kill driver conveying cash to Delta Government House

There was confusion on Thursday at the Delta State Government House Annex, Warri as suspected armed robbers shot dead a driver in a failed robbery attempt.
Our correspondent gathered that the driver who was killed by the robbers was believed to be carrying huge cash from a bank to the officials in the annex.
Eye witness account said that the driver and some staff of the Government House Annex had gone to a bank to withdraw money for logistics needed for the Delta State Waterways Security meeting scheduled to hold at the annex.
The suspected armed robbers, according to an eye witness, trailed the driver from an undisclosed bank and double-crossed his vehicle a few meters to the Government House Annex, but the driver managed to brush aside the vehicle and was heading towards gate when the gang members shot and killed him.
The incident which occurred at about 12noon caused officials in the Government House Annex to scamper to safety.
It was further gathered from other sources that the robbers had laid ambush for the vehicle conveying the cash at the entrance to the Annex by Edjeba Expressway.
Our Correspondent also learnt that after the robbers shot the driver, he managed to still drive the car conveying the money safely into the Government House from where he was rushed to the hospital.
He, however, died before he could get to the hospital.
As at the time of filling this report, police sources told our correspondent that mobile police men on guard at the Annex gave the robbers a hot chase but could not apprehend them.
The Delta state police command has yet to confirm the incident.
