Russia 2018: Rohr set to invite Okoye to Eagles

Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr, is monitoring the performance of German-born Nigerian goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, and could hand him a maiden call-up to the national team ahead of the 2018 World Cup holding in Russia.

The Point gathered that in November last year, the Nigeria Football Federation scout, Victor Agali, held clear-the-air talks with Okoye over playing for the Super Eagles and discussions went on smoothly with Okoye, strongly hinting on Instagram after the meeting that he’s ready to represent his beloved Nigeria, rather than Germany at international level.

Another German-born Fortuna Düsseldorf product, Leon Balogun, has become a very important player in the Super Eagles team after committing his international future to Nigeria in 2014.

Okoye does not need to apply to FIFA to change his association, as he has not played competitively for Germany at any level.

This season, the 18-year-old has been in-between the pipes 15 times for the youth teams of Fortuna Düsseldorf in the A-Junioren Bundesliga West and Regionalliga West, and has posted four shutouts.

Meanwhile, Nigerian midfielder, Irhene Fidelis Christopher, has said he is good enough to be a member of the Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles.

The gifted midfielder who joined AEL Limassol of Cyprus at the beginning of the European season from Portuguese giants, FC Porto, has been a rave review in that country.

Fidelis further stressed that he wants the NFF and national team handlers to ransack the whole of Europe for quality players for the national team, as he believes Nigeria has enough quality players scattered all over the world to do well at the FIFA World Cup in Russia and beyond.

He also advised that the NFF must look beyond 2018, as they rebuild the national team.
