Senate commences sittings on 2022 Budget

The Senate has opened the debate on the 2022 budget barely a week after President Muhammadu Buhari submitted the document to a joint sitting of the National Assembly.

The debate, according to Senate President Ahmad Lawan, who presided over the session, would end on Wednesday.

The year 2022 Appropriation Bill is titled, ‘A bill for an Act to authorise the issuance from the Consolidated Revenue Fund, the total sum of N16,391,023, 917,692, etc.’

It was gathered that the House of Representatives will, on Wednesday, begin deliberation on the 2022 Budget.

During the period, the lawmakers would be expected to give their inputs on the financial document.

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila announced at plenary, on Tuesday, that the House would suspend other businesses to allow all the Appropriation Sub-Committees to engage the government’s Ministries, Departments, and Agencies on the budget.

Gbajabiamila said, “We are going to distribute copies of President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter and budget to lawmakers.

“Members who are interested in the debate on the budget as presented by Mr President, please send your names to the Clerk. We will be having the debate, two days: Wednesday and Thursday after which we will suspend plenary for work to start on the budget, the budget defense.

“The timetable will be released to the committees by tomorrow (Wednesday).
