THE Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Mahmood Yakubu for a second term in office as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

His confirmation was sequel to a consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya, which okayed him for the job.

The report was submitted at Tuesday’s plenary, with the senators saying he was highly qualified for the job.

The Point had reported that Air Vice-Marshal Ahmed Muazu (retd), a National Commissioner, took over as the acting Chairman of INEC on November 9.

This followed the expiration of the five-year tenure of Mahmood Yakubu.

Yakubu had handed over to Muazu on Monday, despite his reappointment by President Muhammadu Buhari on October 27, this year.

The move, he said became necessary since his reappointment had not been confirmed by the Senate.
