Septuagenarian woman dragged to court for allegedly stealing N1.7m

A 70-year-old woman, Titilayo Ibrahim, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, capital of Osun State, for allegedly stealing the sum of N1.7million.

Mrs Ibrahim was accused of selling another person’s land to one Ogedengbe Adekunle and refusing to return his money after the original owner of the land claimed it.

The police docked the accused person for theft and was also alleged of threatening to kill the complainant after demanding for the return of his money.

According to police prosecutor, Sholola Oluwatosin, the offence was committed on October 15, 2021 in Osogbo.

The charge sheet obtained in court read, “That you Titilayo Ibrahim of number 4, Isale- Aro Osogbo, Osun State, on October 15, 2021 in the Osogbo Magistral District did obtain the sum of One Million Seven Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,700,000.00) from one Ogedengbe Adekunle, being payment for two plots of land situated and lying at opposite Imam Banni Mosque Halleluyah Estate Osogbo with a claim to be the rightful owner of the said land knowingly well the land is not yours thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 12 Law of Osun State of Nigeria 2002

“That you Titilayo Ibrahim of the aforementioned Magisterial District on the above date and place, did steal the sum of 1,700,000.00, the property of one Ogedengbe Adekunle and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 390 of Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 2 Law of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

“You, Titilayo Ibrahim, did commit a felony with stealing/threat to life of one Ogedengbe Adekunle and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Law of Osun State Nigeria 2002.”

The woman pleaded not guilty to the allegations slammed against her.

Her counsel, Kehinde Adepoju urged the court to grant the accused person bail, arguing that she would be available to stand her trial.

Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara granted the septuagenarian woman bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in the same amount.

He said one of the sureties must be a relative of the defendant while the other should be a reasonable member of the society who must own a house in the court’s jurisdiction.
