Seven dangerous bridges giving Lagosians jitters

There is no gainsaying the fact that Lagos State is known for its many flyovers and bridges. However, some of these bridges have assumed notoriety, due to the activities of criminal elements operating within their vicinity.

These innocuous social infrastructure have become blackspots for crime! Miscreants along these bridges often target heavy traffic routes to unleash terror on hapless commuters and residents of the city.

Due to this development, many residents, who leave their homes for work very early and return late in the night, have become afraid and jittery whenever they have to move around these notorious bridges.

An intelligence report sighted by The Point identified these seven notorious bridges in Lagos, describing them as “dangerous” for motorists and commuters alike.

Aside the fact that unsuspecting members of the public are disposed of valuables around these bridges, some are injured or even killed by these hoodlums, whose operations are usually fast and deadly.

Only those who had fallen victims to these suspected miscreants terrorising the commuters and motorist using these bridges could tell the story better. Security agents in the state have, however, been battling to protect residents from these miscreants operating on these bridges.

Constant patrols mounted by security personnel around some of these bridges have reduced the incidences of robbery in the past few months.

Yet, these miscreants still seize the slightest opportunity to attack commuters and motorists around these bridges. Below are the dangerous bridges, which only the courageous in Lagos dare to use.

Aside the fact that unsuspecting members of the public are disposed of valuables around these bridges, some are injured or even killed by …hoodlums, whose operations are usually fast and deadly

Kara Long Bridge

Those who ply the Long Bridge of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway always pray that their vehicles do not develop any sudden mechanical fault or break down, because of the “fearful” stories associated with this bridge. Many Nigerians have lost their lives to the activities of suspected robbers on this bridge. Those whose vehicles break down on this bridge are exposed to robbers, who have hideouts under the bridge and only climbs up with the aid of some ropes to rob any unfortunate motorist. One would just have to pray very hard that the suspected robbers operating on this bridge aren’t around when your vehicle breaks down. Sometimes these robbers take advantage of traffic jams to rob people in their cars.

Third Mainland Bridge

There have been countless cases of people getting robbed on this bridge connecting the Mainland to the Island. Anyone whose car develops a fault and breaks down on this bridge risks being attacked by bandits, who are usually armed. These robbers also rob in heavy traffic, which is why motorists always wind up their side windows when caught in gridlocks on this bridge. Sometimes the suspected hoodlums even break the windows. When someone is being attacked on this bridge during the day or night, it is very rare for anyone to come to his rescue. Everyone will usually just keep a straight face and drive past.

Mile 2 – Oshodi

Bridge This is another notorious blackspot for criminal activities. The hoodlums under the bridge at Oshodi are notorious for snatching bags. Under the Oshodi Bridge, anything can happen.

Obalende Bridge

The large space under the Obalende Bridge is home to different kinds of people, the good, the bad and the ugly. Some of the hoodlums, who live under the bridge are known to hang along the bridge at night, waiting for their preys. During the day, the area is safe, but at night, the suspected hoodlums come out in their hundreds, harassing road users.

Iyana-Oworo/Ogudu Bridge

Many have fallen victim to robbers’ attack on this bridge. You just have to be careful with your possessions, because suspected miscreants around this bridge seem to have the lightest fingers – they can snatch bags, phones or any other valuable from passengers in a moving car.

Cele Bridge

Constructed during the tenure of the immediate past governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola, it is one of the newest of such bridges in Lagos State. A section of the bridge has been turned into a haven for Indian hemp smokers. If this development is not nipped in the bud, it might be the harbinger of bigger crimes in the area.

Anthony and Gbagada Under-Bridge

This is one of the dangerous bridges in Lagos, especially at night. There have been cases of residents of the area getting mugged at various spots close to the two bridges in these two places, which are just few meters apart.
