The police in Ogun have arrested a resident of Sango Ota area of the state, Mr. Tajudeen Akintoye, for allegedly raping a disabled lady, Ruth Onizulike.
Tajudeen, 60, who is currently in the net of the Anti-rape Squad of the police, allegedly forcibly had canal knowledge of the 22-year-old physically challenged lady in her house in Itele, Ota, when her parents and guardians were not at home.
It was further learnt that Akintoye, who was in the disabled lady’s house in the afternoon, had noticed that nobody was with her before he carried her to her parents’ sitting room, where he allegedly raped her.
Akintoye was, however, caught by a member of the lady’s family while perpetrating the act.
Sources said the suspect must have been taking advantage of the victim for long before he was eventually caught.
A resident of the community, who spoke with our correspondent, Mr. Ahmed Akilo, said the sexagenarian was able to take advantage of the young lady, who could not also talk, when she was left alone in the house.
“The man must have been coming when people were not at home to sleep with the lady. He was able to take advantage of her because of her condition. He met her in front of the house, where her family kept her and carried her inside the sitting room to sleep with her,” he said.
Another resident, who simply identified herself as Tunde, also confirmed the incident, saying, “The wicked man is supposed to be castrated for his evil deed. If not for the family of the victim that decided to involve police, residents were ready to mob him. How will you take advantage of such a vulnerable person? He didn’t even consider the fact that the lady could not walk and talk; he just grabbed her and raped her. If I had my way, I would say he should be compelled to marry the lady.”
Meanwhile, the father of the victim, Mr. Leonard Onuzulike, told our correspondent that Akintoye was able to rape his daughter because she was alone at home.
He said Ruth was left in front of the house by the family to check their farm beside the house, but when they returned, they found the suspect sleeping with her in their sitting
room.
He said, “Ruth is physically challenged that she cannot do things on her own. We usually carry her to do whatever she wants to do. On this day, we left her outside in front of our house and went to farm, and not more than 30 minutes later, we came back and met this man performing this evil act with her in my parlour.
Then I held him, after raising the alarm. But as I left him with some people and went to police station to report the case, the man ran away. Later in the night, at about 10pm, he was arrested by
policemen.”
The father of the victim also said she had not been feeling well since the suspect allegedly raped her.
It was also gathered that the suspect, who is currently cooling off his feet in police net, had confessed to committing the
crime.
A police source, who didn’t want his name mentioned, said, “He has confessed to the crime. He said it was devil’s work, and we will make sure that the same devil will make him face the wrath of the law.”
Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said, “The suspect will be arraigned in court at the completion of investigation of
the case.”
