Six arraigned for robbery, assaulting policemen

Six men have been arraigned before an Ajegunle, Lagos Magistrates’ Court for robbery and assaulting policemen.

The accused were also charged with damage to vehicles and possession of dangerous weapons.

The policemen attached to Ajegunle Police Station arrested Steven Taiwo, 18; Kadiri Jimoh, 18; Kehinde Lasisi, 18; Bolaji Ahmed, 20; Victor Ekwili, 18; and Adeyemi Joshua alleged to be in possession of cutlasses, bottles and other dangerous weapons.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo, the six men, “At about 00:15hours at the Cemetery area of Ajegunle, Apapa Lagos in the Apapa
Magisterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit robbery and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria,
2015.”

In the second charge, the aforementioned accused persons in the same magisterial district did, “have in your possession cutlasses, knives, and other dangerous weapons. You possess offensive weapons for the purpose of robbery and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 330 (B) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

The third count read, “The accused persons did unlawfully  assemble together at Cemetery area, which disturbed the peace of the people in both Kehinde and Cemetery (streets) and environs in Ajegunle Apapa and thereby committed an offence contrary to  and punishable under Section 45 (2)  of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria,
2015.

According to the fourth count, the accused persons “Did unlawfully assault the police officers who were drafted to the scene by throwing stones at them and thereby committed an offence contrary to and  punishable under Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria,
2015″.

They were also accused of being “armed with cutlasses, knives and other dangerous weapons in public without authority and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 51 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

In the sixth count, the accused persons “unlawfully assaulted Afeez Amusa with cutlass and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

That accused persons were also charged with “Willfully damaging a Suzuki vehicle bus  with registration number AA 84 HER windscreen valued N50, 000.00, property `of one Afeez Amusa and thereby committed an offence contrary to  and punishable under Section 350 of the Criminal Law Lagos State of Nigeria,
2015.”

They also “Willfully damaged one Power Bike valued N200, 000.00, property of one Kehinde Afolabi and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria,
2015.”

The accused persons also “Unlawfully assaulted one Kehinde Afolabi with cutlass and inflicted injury on his head  and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

The six accused persons pleaded not guilty to the eight-count charge against them.

Magistrate N.A. LayenI granted them bail in the sum of N100, 000.00 and one surety each, who must be their blood
relations.
