Sokoto rerun: Police to deploy 690 personnel to polling units

As part of a measure to ensure hitch-free court-ordered rerun elections in the state, the Nigerian Police Force, Sokoto State command is set to deploy 15 personnel to each of the affected 46 polling units in the state.

The expected total number of police personnel to be deployed to man the 46 polling units, according to INEC is 690.

The Administrative Secretary, Independent National Electoral Commission in the state, Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen during the distribution of sensitive materials for the polls at the INEC office on Thursday.

Kangiwa, who is the acting Residential Electoral Commission in the state said the commission has reached an agreement with the police force and other security agents in the state to ensure that the election is free, fair, and credible.

“We have reached a compromise with the security agents and I can confirm to you that the Nigerian Police has agreed to deploy a minimum of 15 personnel to each of the 46 polling units where the elections are expected to be conducted.

“All the non-sensitive materials have already been distributed and today we are here for the distribution of sensitive materials to the affected local governments.

“God willing, by tomorrow the materials will be distributed to the ward levels, as we are all aware, the election will commence by 8:30 am on Saturday and end by 2:30 pm.”

She, however, called on the political parties and other stakeholders to do the needful by ensuring peaceful conduct during the rerun election.

The INEC in January said it was ready for rancour-free rerun elections in 46 polling units within the state.

It fixed February 3 for the re-run according to judicial pronouncements across the country, following the appeal court nullification of some of the elections in the state.
