Teacher who fled after raping, impregnating female student arrested

BY TIMOTHY AGBOR, OSOGBO

Operatives of the Department of State Services in Osun State have arrested a teacher, Sunday Akanni, for allegedly having forceful carnal knowledge of one of his students and putting the 16-year-old girl in the family way.

Akanni, a teacher at Touch Life Premier School, Ido-Osun, Egbedore Local Government Area of the state, was accused of defiling the girl (name withheld) on the first week of her admission in the private school.

It was gathered that Akanni, who lived with his parents in Ido-Osun community, asked the minor to come to his house and collect a note book after school hours.

He was said to have defiled her inside his room in May, 2023, and threatened to kill the girl if she disclosed her ordeals to anyone.

Meanwhile, the victim started falling sick after four months, a situation that made her older sister to take her to the hospital where it was discovered that she was four months pregnant.

It was gathered that Akanni, said to be an undergraduate of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, but was teaching at the private school on part-time basis, had allegedly made an attempt to abort the pregnancy but was unsuccessful.

The victim’s sister had told The Point that “the teacher was aware that my sister was pregnant before we got to know. He even told her to use alum and alcohol to abort the pregnancy. Thank God she didn’t do it.”

Meanwhile, Akanni fled the community after people got wind of his ungodly act.

After The Point’s story last week, a manhunt was said to have been launched by security agents before he was apprehended.

The relatives of the victims, however, cried out that Akanni’s family had been mounting pressure on them and the teenage girl to let go of the case.

“We don’t want this case to be swept under the carpet. They have been coming to us and asking us to withdraw the matter. We told them the law should take its course.

They feel we are poor and they may want to use their connection and money to make the teacher escape. That is why we are crying to all Nigerians to rise to our assistance,” the victim’s sister said.

The Point gathered that the continous stay of the victim in the same area with the parents of the suspect hadbeen making her uncomfortable.

As it stands now, there is no functional home for those who survived sexual abuse in Osun State. The Sexual Assaults Referral Centre at the Osun State Specialist Hospital, Asubiaro, has yet to be put into active use.
