Tears as objects from lorry kill beggar’s son

Tears flowed freely from sympathisers as objects loaded in a lorry fell on a beggar’s 11- year- old boy, killing him instantly in Ajegunle, Lagos State.

The victim was said to have gone under a lorry conveying scavengers’ rubbish parked at Peter’s Street, Ajegunle, loosing a rope when parts of the contents fell on him.

The boy, who people described as the mother’s eldest son,  and his two other siblings usually begged for alms close to the Ajegunle Police Station.

An eyewitness who identified himself simply as Kolawole said that the driver and conductor of the vehicle parked the vehicle and had gone out when the boy went under the vehicle to loose a rope which was used in holding the garbage together when the incident
 occurred.

Kolawole said, “My wife wept profusely when she saw the mother of the deceased weeping uncontrollably. The incident made many people to cry. I used to give them money at times whenever I walked pass Police Station Lane, which is by the fence of  Ajegunle Police Station. Nobody knew what the boy was doing under the lorry but some said they saw him untying the rope which was used in holding the garbage together so that the contents would not fall out of the vehicle. You know how these drivers conveying scavengers’ various objects used to load the vehicles. So when the contents were falling, they fell on the child, killing him instantly. It’s a pity. The mother wept so much that people had to weep with her. Another thing was where were the driver and conductor of the vehicle? They were no where to be found. It was after about an hour that they came to the scene and were astonished when they heard that the contents which they had tied to their vehicle fell and killed a
child.”

Our correspondent gathered that the matter was reported at Ajegunle police station where the police were said to have interrogated the driver and conductor over the incident.
