Nigeria’s Flamingos at the ongoing Under-17 Women’s World Cup in India, made history on Friday by qualifying for the semi-final of the tournament.

The tournament witnessed the Nigerian team defeat favourites United States 4-3 via a penalty shoot-out in the quarter-final match of the competition, after both sides played out a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Onamuzo Edafe put Nigeria ahead in the 25th minute after a VAR review ruled a foul in favour of Amina Bello in the box, with the referee pointing to the spot.

The US team drew level just before half time after a strike by Amalia Villarreal.

Nigeria who have failed to reach the semi-final in six previous editions, now advanced to the next stage on their fourth quarter-final appearance.
