Unlicensed driver crushes 51-year-old man to death

truck driver, Garuba Abdulahi, has been arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly crushing a 51-year-old man, Ade Ilufeme, to death.

The 28-year-old accused person was brought to the court by Inspector Ahmed Abulahman from the Kirikiri Police Station.

The prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that Abdulahi committed the offence contrary to Section 20 of the Road Traffic Act, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2012 and Section 7 (1) of the Road Traffic  Law of 2003.

The prosecutor also said that Abdulahi, who was driving recklessly and dangerously, and even without a driver’s licence along Okoduwa Road, Kirikiri Town, Lagos State, crushed the victim with his DAF truck with Lagos registration number EPE 984 XM.

The prosecutor told the court that the  accused person who resides at Saba Street, Maza- Maza, Lagos State, “drove  same (vehicle) on the public motor way in a manner which was reckless and dangerous to public having regard to the circumstance of the case, including the nature, condition and use of Highway Code and caused the death of one Ade Ilufemi aged 51 years of No. 6, Agunbiade Street, Kirikiri Town, Lagos, by knocking him down with your vehicle.”

In the second charge, prosecutor added that the same driver in charge of the vehicle “drove same without Driver’s Licence.”

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the two -count
charge.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Joy Ugbomoiko, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N200, 000 with sureties that would produce evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, with additional
verification.

Ugbomoiko adjourned the case till September 26, 2018, for mention.
