Wike’s romance with APC rattles PDP

Tinubu’s group justifies alliance with Rivers Gov

Says conspiracy against Wike in PDP huge, unprecedented

The increasingly chummy relationship between Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and top chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress is making the opposition Peoples Democratic Party feel uncomfortable, investigations by The Point have revealed.

Wike, a disgruntled top member of the people has been orchestrating a convivial and warm disposition with members of the APC in the last two months to the utter consternation of the PDP.

Speaking with The Point on Wednesday, a chieftain of the PDP from Rivers State said the party is worried and would like to see a solution to the matter in earnest.

The party stalwart who would not mention his name blamed the lackadaisical approach of the party to the issue of reconciliation after the national convention, saying “it was like the leadership of the party misread what would be the outcome of their nonchalant attitude to a top member of the party.”

He added that now “they are green with envy and running up and down trying to undo the damage they brought on the party by their inaction and indecision.

“A strong supporter of the governor just defected to the APC. I mean the man called Sudor Nwiyor. And you know what that means. It is a pointer to the things to come. I am worried as an individual. I know other leaders are also worried. Take the Board of Trustees Chairman, for instance, he is worried.

The party is worried but the ego of a few is a problem.

“They are pretending that nothing is wrong, I tell you a thousand things are wrong with PDP just now and I am worried and I can bet you many others are worried. How can a strong opposition allow itself to be destroyed by a few ambitious individuals? This is sad,” he told The Point.

Also on Wednesday, a political support group, Asiwaju Project Beyond 2023, confirmed the talks between the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu and Wike.

It said that the coalition is a good omen for the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The Director General of the group, Realwan Okpanachi who stated this in a statement in Abuja said that the Tinubu-Wike proposed alliance was a good omen for the APC, added that Wike’s step was justified.

Confirming the talks between the two sides, he said, “We can confirm to you authoritatively that Wike and his team met with Tinubu in London to discuss strategic alliance ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

“Both leaders appreciate the need to work together to ensure that Tinubu becomes the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023.

“The question is, is Wike justified to take this particular step? The answer is capital yes. What do you expect from a governor that has given everything to sustain the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) only to be slightly compromised and embarrassed by the same party and its leaders/officers?”

Okpanachi further said that Wike was equally taking the step to ensure his political survival after the 2023 election.

“Wike is old and politically experienced and savvy enough to make his decisions.

“He is entitled to take any necessary step or measure that will guarantee his political survival after the 2023 elections.

“There’s no better way to do it than forming a strategic alliance with Tinubu ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“There is nothing in PDP for Wike anymore. He has lost his bearing and goodwill in the party.

“The political conspiracy against him in the PDP is huge and unprecedented,” he said.

Wike had on Monday with some of his allies reportedly travelled to London to meet Tinubu for critical talks on their political future.

The delegation reportedly comprised some PDP governors and other major personalities in Wike’s camp.

The Rivers Governor has been at loggerheads with the party since the May 28 National Convention where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the Presidential Candidate of the party for the 2023 general election.

An unimpressed Wike has been given conditions upon which he would support the Atiku and join him to prosecute his campaign for the election.

Wike has been inviting chieftains of the APC to inaugurate sundry projects in his state. They include governors, both serving and former, lawmakers including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila and others.
