Woman dragged to court for allegedly stealing over N6m from two men

The Police in Osun State have arrested and arraigned a 40-year-old woman, Odeniyan Olumide, for allegedly swindling and stealing over N6million from two men. At a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, where Olumide was docked, the police accused the defendant of stealing the money at different times.

The prosecutor, Fagboyinbo Abiodun, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, informed the court that sometime in the month of April, 2021, Olumide stole the sum of N6 million from one Rasaq Babajide. Also, on October 21, same year, Abiodun alleged that the accused person obtained the sum of N36,850,00 from one Olaniyan Mukaila after pretending to supply some bags of cement to him.

The charge read, “That you Odeniyan Olumide, sometime in the month of April, 2021, at Agunbelewo Area, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did steal the sum of N6,000,000,00 (Six Million Naira), property of one Rasaq Babajide and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol II Laws of Osun State, Nigeria, 2002.

“That you Odeniyan Olumide on the 21st day of October, 2021 at Agunbelewo Area, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did obtain the sum of N36, 850,00 (Thirty-Six Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty Naira), from one Olaniyan Mukaila with the pretence of supplying him eleven bags of cement, knowing fully it is false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol II Laws of Osun State, Nigeria, 2002.

“You, Odeniyan Olumide, in the same date, time and place, did steal the sum of N38,850,00, property of one Olaniyan Mukaila and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol II, Laws of Osun State, Nigeria, 2002.” However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

The defence counsel, M. Akintejuwa, applied for her bail and promised that the defendant would be available to stand her trail. Chief Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara granted the accused person bail in the sum of N2million with two sureties in the same amount. He said the sureties were to swear to affidavit of means and furnish the court with their passport photographs.
