I’ve not slept with my wife for over a year, man tells court

One Mr. Rasheed Abiola has approached an Igando customary court to dissolve a 22-year-old marriage between him and his wife, Fatimah Abiola.

Rasheed had approached the court to dissolve the marriage over what he called the defiance of his wife, which he said had also been responsible for her refusal to allow him to sleep with her in the past one year.

While praying the court to grant his wish, Abiola also alleged that his wife had been disobedient to his mother.

“My mother and I had warned Fatimah several times to stop wearing trousers, but she would not heed our warnings. I can no longer cope with her way of life and her deviant attitude,” he said.

Abiola also accused his wife of threatening him whenever he attempted to marry another wife.

“Fatimah is threatening to harm me if I make any attempt to marry another woman. But Fatimah and I have not been sleeping together as husband and wife for years. She once left the house and never returned until after a year,” he told the court.

Abiola, who said he was already facing depression due to the situation, begged the court to save his life by dissolving the marriage.

Meanwhile, the defendant, Fatimah, told the court that her husband was only lying against her, adding that the court could grant her husband’s wish to dissolve the marriage for peace to reign.

While delivering judgement on the case, the court’s President, Akin Akinniyi, concluded that the couple was already fed up with their marriage and therefore, dissolved it.

He said, “Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage.

“The court pronounces the marriage between Mr. Rasheed Abiola and Mrs. Fatimah dissolved. Both parties, henceforth, cease to be husband and wife.

“Both are free to go their separate ways without
any hindrance and molestation.”
