A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, sitting in Apo, has convicted a former member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, Farouk Lawan, for receiving $500,000 bribe from a businessman, Femi Otedola.

Lawan was convicted by Justice Angella Otaluka over a $3 million bribery case filed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He was sentenced to seven years for Count 1, seven years for Count 2, and five years for Count 3. The terms are to run concurrently.

Justice Ataluka said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Recall that a suit marked ‘FHC/HC/CR/76/2013’ was filed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria against Farouk Lawan for demanding $3 million and obtaining the sum of $500,000 from Femi Otedola to remove his company from the list of indicted companies before the House of Reps Adhoc Committee on fuel subsidy.
