…calls on administrators, government and corporate bodies to rescue the situation
The proprietor of Rojenny Games Village in Oba, Anambra State, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka has revealed that sport development in the state is dead and called on sport administrators, government and corporate bodies doing business in the once reverred sporting state to help rescue the situation which is becoming worrisome.
Speaking exclusively to The Point, the highly travelled sport administrator and Nigeria’s first and only individual to own a Games Village said that he is saddened by the situation despite having an edifice which is key at promoting sport development in the state.
“There is total neglect of sport in Anambra which is quite sickening. May be it is because government have its priority in other areas which is not helping in the development of sport.
“We need serious commitment from administrators, government and corporate bodies to rescue the situation because Anambra use to be home of great sports men and women like Mary Onyeali, but today the reverse is the case,” he said with a tinge of regret.
“We have the Rojenny Games Village with all the major sporting facilities in it, but coaches, athletes and administrators are not making good of these facilities. They need to come forward and train world beaters in this edifice instead of chasing shadows.
“I challenge the Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Anambra to come forward and present his or her blue print for sports development in Anambra and you will find out that there is no concerted effort being made to raise the poor state of our sport here. After four years, the Commissioner of Sport has nothing to offer and this must stop!”
Reacting on the reasons why companies do not want to identify with sport development or its sponsorship, Ezeonwuka took a swipe at them saying companies are only after politicians.
“It is heart rendering that companies doing business in Anambra are only after supporting politicians to win elections at the detriment of sport development. They are ready to splash millions of naira to support politicians, but they neglect our youths in the area of bankrolling sponsorships for sporting activities and I call for a change of heart in this regard,” he concluded.
