Fake doctor arrested over Osun pregnant woman’s death set free, resumes duty at illegal clinic

A secondary school leaver, Saheed Toyin Oladiti, who was arrested for allegedly operating as a medical doctor at a hospital he established six years ago has been set free, investigation by The Point has revealed.

Oladiti, who was nabbed by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command over the death of a pregnant woman, was found at his illegal clinic when journalists visited Ororuwo on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old quack doctor opened the unlicensed maternity centre situated at number 2, Lakewu Area, Ororuwo, Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State for his usual business.

It was gathered that Oladiti had mobilised some suspected thugs who harassed some journalists and warned them against writing any reports about his alleged illegal medical operations in the community.

The Point further gathered that some journalists who visited the community were dragged to the palace of the traditional in charge of Ororuwo, Oba Kamarudeen Adeyanju, by the hoodlums hired by Oladiti.

Addressing the journalists, Oba Adeyanju lambasted them for exposing Oladiti, his subject’s alleged sharp practices and warned them to desist from reporting the incident.

The monarch reportedly threatened to sue any journalist who makes any report on the unlicensed clinic.

Adeyanju said such journalists risk “untimely death” if he hears or reads of any report pertaining to Oladiti’s clinic named Oloruntoyin Clinic.

When The Point contacted the Osun State Commissioner for Health, Jola Akintola, he asked our correspondent to phone him back at night.

On how Oladiti got released without prosecution, The Point’s findings revealed that the NSCDC in the state had handed over the suspect to the Osun State Ministry of Justice for prosecution.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the command, ASC Kehinde Adeleke, Oladiti was handed over to the state government through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ministry of Justice on May 3, 2024.

Adeleke told The Point that the command doesn’t have the power to prosecute the suspect, hence, his transfer to the ministry for prosecution.

In a letter addressed to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Osun State, Jimi Bada, a copy was made available to The Point on Wednesday; Oladiti’s case file of manslaughter and illegal operation of the maternity centre was handed over to the Ministry of Justice.

The letter signed by Adaralewa Michael, Osun NSCDC Commandant and titled: “A case of Manslaughter and Illegal Operation,” asked the Attorney General to peruse the case file for prosecution.

It reads, “This is a case of Manslaughter and Illegal Operation against one Oladiti Sahe Toyla (M. 32 years), a self-acclaimed doctor who was operating a maternity centre at Ororuwo, Boripe local government area without licence.

“His quackery and unprofessionalism resulted in the death of one pregnant woman Ibikunle Olanike on Thursday 18 April, 2024 after she was delivered of a baby.

“The file is hereby handed over to your esteem office for your perusal and prosecution.”

When The Point contacted the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Jimi Bada on the telephone, he didn’t pick his call.

The Point had reported that Oladiti confessed that he has been parading himself as a medical doctor for the past six years after he founded a clinic in the community.

The suspect whose highest qualification is Secondary School Certificate Examination has been operating an unlicensed clinic for the past six years and two months.

He also has people who are undergoing training in his clinic as staff, according to the civil defence corps.

“While making his confessional statement, the suspect, Oladiti Toyin said on the 15th of April, 2024, a pregnant woman with 9 months and 3 weeks pregnancy visited his hospital popularly known as Oloruntoyin Clinic at No 2, Lakewu area, Ororuwo, Boripe Local Government, Osun State.

“According to him, the pregnant woman could not continue her antenatal care at her previous hospital because she had a misunderstanding with her husband. The self–acclaimed doctor said he checked her blood pressure which was low and gave her some drugs. He thereafter asked her to come back whenever she fell into labour.

“On Thursday, 18th April 2024, the woman began to experience labour symptoms and was in the hospital where she was delivered of a baby. The victim developed some complications shortly after and was later rushed to a nearby licensed hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Further discreet investigation revealed that the suspect also engaged in the training of people to become quack doctors like him with the sum of Five Thousand Naira only (N5,000).

“The Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Osun State command, Dr Michael Adaralewa said Section. 343(1e) of the Criminal Code Act which provides that any person who in a manner so rash or negligent as to endanger human life or likely cause harm to any other person gives medical or surgical treatment to any person whom he has undertaken to treat is guilty of a misdemeanor and is liable.

“Commandant Adaralewa, therefore, assured members of the public that the suspect would be made to face the full wrath of the law upon the conclusion of investigation. While calling on members of the public to be mindful of medical institutions they visit when seeking medical attention, he calls on the public to report quacks to security agencies for prompt action,” the corps spokesperson had said.
